Quaker Links

Dear Friends,

Web sites and email addresses in this section are included as additional resources to Quaker households. Many have been passed along to me from other Friends and persons involved in either youth ministry or pastoral care.  All of the sites in this section have been reviewed previously by Kevin Lee, and seem appropriate for Quaker young people. As always, however, parents are advised to monitor their child’s web surfing adventures.

Quaker Organizations

New England Yearly Meeting of Friends: Hey, it’s all about us! This is our YM Web site! Features NEYM Staff info, Directory of Meetings and Directions to Meetings, The New England Friend (newsletter), youth retreats info and contacts and lots more. Also lists very useful links to other Quaker sites around NEYM and beyond.  Go visit yourself at: http://www.neym.org/

·        Be sure to check out the First Day School and Parenting Resources page that’s a part of this site, or jump right to it at http://www.neym.org/fdsprweb/index.htm

Friends General Conference. From their Home Page:  “FGC provides resources and opportunities that educate and invite members and attenders to experience, individually and corporately, God's living presence, and to discern and follow God's leadings. FGC reaches out to seekers and to other religious bodies inside and outside the wider Religious Society of Friends.”  Features upcoming conferences and programs, Quaker Library, History of Friends and Resources for Meetings. This site is also directly linked to the FGC’s Bookstore, which is a terrific source of all things Quaker and much, much more.  http://www.fgcquaker.org/  To go to FGC’s Online Bookstore directly, visit www.quakerbooks.org

Friends United Meeting. From their Home Page: “Friends United Meeting commits itself to energize and equip Friends through the power of the Holy Spirit to gather people into fellowships where Jesus Christ is known, loved and obeyed as Teacher and Lord.”  Features information on world Missions, FUM Press, North American Ministries, Quaker Hill Bookstore and Quaker Life, FUM’s magazine. http://www.fum.org/index.html

Woolman Hill Quaker Retreat and Conference Center. From their Web Site:Woolman Hill is a Quaker retreat, conference, and education center, offering a range of programs on topics of spiritual reflection and social renewal.” Located in Deerfield MA, this facility is the frequent site of many of our JYM Elementary Retreats. Be sure to check out their other retreat offerings and use their text directions if you’re headed to Woolman Hill at: http://www.gis.net/~woolmanh/index.html.

American Friends Service Committee.  From their Home Page: “The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker organization that includes people of various faiths who are committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service.” My guess and hope is that most are already familiar with their important work and ministry around the world.  http://www.afsc.org/

Friends Camp. From their Home Page: “Friends Camp is a small, residential Quaker summer camp located in South China, Maine...a small town about 75 miles north of Portland. Under the care of New England Yearly Meeting.” Friends Camp is in all probability a household word already among parents reading this page. But, we wouldn’t want to overlook this terrific camp experience for Quaker children! http://www.friendscamp.org/

Farm and Wilderness Camps. From their Web Site: “Farm & Wilderness consists of six summer camps for children and adolescents, a family camp, and year-round educational programs. While each experience provides unique programs based on age and interests, all are rooted in the Quaker understanding of respect for ourselves, each other and the natural world.” This is a popular camp for Quaker young people that is independently owned. http://www.fandw.org/

Quaker.org. This is an exhaustive, no-frills, text only repository of all things Quaker! It’s all here, from most of what’s on this page, to Quaker commentary, writings, sources of Quaker discussion groups, etc. My good friend Russ Nelson started this site some years ago as a service to and for Friends. You may have seen their bumper sticker, “We Save Sinners at Potluck Dinners!” which is my favorite.  Check it out at http://quaker.org/

Pendle Hill.  From their Home Page: “Pendle Hill is a Quaker center for study and contemplation in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. It was founded in 1930, to be of service to the Religious Society of Friends, to like-minded persons, and to the world.”  Pendle Hill is an incredible place to experience a retreat, sojourn, or reside at for an extended period of study and reflection.  http://www.pendlehill.org/  Visit the Pendle Hill Bookstore at http://www.pendlehill.org/bookstore.html.

Private Non-Profit Organizations

Children’s Defense Fund. From their Web Site: “The mission of the Children's Defense Fund is to Leave No Child Behind® and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Safe Start, in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.” So what’s left to say? This organization was founded and continues to be lead by Marian Wright Edleman. I have enormous respect for her and the work of this organization.  http://www.childrensdefense.org/

Child Welfare League of America. From their Online Mission Statement: “The Child Welfare League of America is the nation's oldest and largest membership-based child welfare organization. We are committed to engaging people everywhere in promoting the well-being of children, youth, and their families, and protecting every child from harm.”  In my humble opinion, this organization does very good work!  http://www.cwla.org/default.htm

Family Health and Wellness

Note: Visitors are advised that some medical sites have been determined to be either inaccurate, outdated or simply wrong about what they present, according to some rating services.  The following have, according to PC Family Magazine, been found to be very reliable and up to date. As a rule of thumb, parents are advised to visit more than one source and to bear in mind that no online medical site should take the place of a physician’s consult.

Medscape: This is considered a top rated site. Check it out at:    http://www.medscape.com/px/urlinfo

Dr. Koop.com. A very useful site for looking up all things medical. Again, this site is rated as very good also.   http://www.drkoop.com/

Merriam-Webster’s Medical Dictionary.   http://medical-dictionary.com/index.html

MedicineNet.com.  A great source of “how-to” info for providing first aid. Also has useful info on poisons, poison control numbers and descriptions of diseases, etc.  http://www.medicinenet.com/Script/Main/Art.asp?li=MNI&ArticleKey=224

WebMD Center. http://webmd.com/

Family Education.Com.  This top rated, longest running family focused Site could be in several of our categories. A great resource. Checkout their weekly newsletter, it’s loaded with useful goodies.  http://familyeducation.com/home/

Children Now.  This too, is one of the best out there for info and all things “family.”  http://www.childrennow.org/

KidsHealth For Parents. By the Nemours Foundation. This is a great site!  http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/index.html

The American Academy of Pediatrics.  http://www.pediatrics.org/

Harvard School of Public Health: Headlice Information. Well, sorry to remind you! But this is a great site if you’re wondering what to look for! Happy parenting!  http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/headlice.html

Center For Disease Control. You name it, they cover it. A very useful and reliable site of the Federal Government.   http://www.cdc.gov/

Starbright. From their Web Site: “The STARBRIGHT Foundation is dedicated to the development of projects that empower seriously ill children to combat the medical and emotional challenges they face on a daily basis.” A useful site for parents/adults who either know of or have a child living with a life threatening illness.  http://www.starbright.org/

Just For the Health of It! A good source of therapeutic humor! By Patty Wooten, RN, BSN.  This is a real gem!

Cyber-Safety

Note:  The following cyber-safety Web Sites have proved to be very useful to me. Parents are reminded, however, that no program, blocking software, or other Web based tools can replace parental diligence and oversight of your child’s online computer use. Take some time, especially with CyberAngles.com, to fully explore what they have to say about protecting and educating your child online. Remember too that pornography deliberately directed towards children and cyber-stalking of every kind is a crime and should be reported to your local police.

CyberAngels.com. This site is involved in protection, education, advocacy and training for cyber space monitors. A very useful site. http://www.cyberangels.org/

CyberTipline.  Site maintained by the National Center for Misssing and Exploited Children. Next to the police, this is the best place for getting help fast. <http://www.missingkids.com/cybertip/>

SafeSurf. About safe web-surfing, Web site rating systems, and more.  http://www.safesurf.com/

Spirituality and Healing

Weeding out the “sap from the sacred” is not only subjective in nature, but time consuming, especially with so many sites that are also advancing their particular experience of “truth” on all things spiritual. The following selections, hopefully, come closer to either the middle ground, are non-denominational, or are useful for basic study, reference and/or reflection by the viewer. Let us know what other sites you have found to be useful along your spiritual journey and perhaps to Friends in general.  My hope is that this section will grow. Thanks!

The Inter-Faith Alliance. A wonderful site that promotes understanding, tolerance, and sharing among people of many religious traditions.  http://www.interfaithalliance.org/

BeliefNet. A huge and very useful site for both sources of spiritual reflection, fellowship and learning. Don’t let the ads that float this site bug you. Ads appear on their pages but don’t “follow you home.” They offer great sections for understanding the rituals and practices of other traditions, such as birth rituals, funerals, weddings, and the like.  http://www.beliefnet.com/

International Bible Society.  Has a great search engine in whatever version you prefer.  They offer a free daily Bible passage via email, which is done simply and without added come-ons, etc.  http://www.gospelcom.net/ibs/

Revised Standard Version Search Tool. Though I have use this site several times, I’m not sure of its origin. It has also not been updated since 1997. (But then, what’s to update?) Seems to be a grad school project. But has great search options, such as simple, Boolean, citation, proximity and book-browse.  http://www.hti.umich.edu/r/rsv/

Bibles.Net. This is such a cool site! The artwork is great. You can also choose any verse and then listen to it being read aloud to you. Has many rare translations, and a good concordance.  http://www.bibles.net/
