Small Groups Two:

"Light-Footed Lies"

A lie can travel half way around the world while truth is still putting on its shoes.  ~Mark Twain

A.    Introduction

Consider posting Twain's poem for children to read and reflect upon. Some questions to get children thinking: Can honesty be "named?" What thing in the world, perhaps natural or person-made, can symbolize honesty? Can we draw or paint or sing in such a way that means being honest?

Also, please read "No One Would Ever Know" (p.26) in Lighting Candles In The Dark.

Art Project: (If you want) Encourage children to create art that means or symbolizes honesty.

B.   Content

Some thoughts to consider exploring:
1. Why does it seem that lies travel so fast? Any examples (from children)?
2. Why is it that truth seems to roll out much more slowly?
3. (If you want to go here......) Did our government lie to us about the reasons for invading Iraq?
4. Even after a lie is discovered for what it is, can the effects, or damage of it be reversed?
5. It seems like being honest, and dealing with people who are not honest, or who lie, is a problem all over the world. How come?
